'Cosmopolis' in Best Movie Magazine - Quotes from Rob and Cronenberg

Translation with google translate:

"I'm afraid," confesses Robert Pattinson.
"Fear for an actor is always a good thing. He's also a fantastic, stunning, a great performer" responds indirectly David Cronenberg. "The script was crazy and difficult," the actor continues. "When I heard that the person was him, I had an intuition. I know that Robert is a grand leap" echoes the director.
Distance dialogue between the student and teacher, working for months on the set of their first project together, for the big screen adaptation of Cosmopolis, the surreal novel by Don DeLillo.
"In the year 2000, one day in April" Thus begins the odyssey, a long 24 hours, Eric Parker, 28 year-old multimillionaire who left home with his white limousine to go to the barber, remains locked in the traffic of Manhattan and is involved in a series of events that jeopardize his safety and his heritage ... It would be impossible to describe in a few lines the surreal journey the protagonist takes in a Manhattan without frontiers, a sort of virtual town where the limo floats like a social network and chat with other "traces" of humanity. Between tasers, pie in the face, the threat of someone wanting to kill him (both as a person and as a symbol of humanity no longer in the horizon) and the presence of his mysterious life companion, ethereal woman, guardian angel and his wife constantly betrayed.

After Crash, Cronenberg continues his exploration of the imaginary modern metropolitan, hallucinated and perverse, using a cast which also includes Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche and Mathieu Amalric
WHY YOU SHOULDN'T MISS IT: To observe the modern world through Cronenberg's look. And it could be Pattinson's professional 'redemption'.

David Cronenberg talks about Cosmopolis and mentions briefly Rob and his fans

Interview with FilmInk

imagebam.com

Fortunately, despite the fear that is currently paralysing the film business, Cronenberg already has his nxt film in the can. Cosmopolis is an adaptation of Don DeLilo's novel about 24 hours in the life of a Manhattan multimillionaire. "I wrote the script in six days, because the book is so cinematic - the dialogue is incredible," Cronenberg says. "That was unusual for me - to write a script that quickly. But then it was waiting to go." The project was brought by him by veteran Portuguese producer, Paolo Branco. "He flew to Toronto," Cronenberg says, "He came with his son, and said, "My son says that you are the right director for this project."
The only issue was that Cronenberg was lined up to shoot A Dangerous Method. "But Paolo said, "I will wait for you." And he did securing the services of one Robert Pattinson in the meantime to play the leading role of Eric Packer, an asset manager who endures a surreal odyssey across New York when he sets out in his hi-tech limo to get his hair cut and finds the car stuck in a monumental traffic jam. "About 70% of it takes place in the back of a limo." confirms cronenberg who still had to deal with legions of R-Pattz fans during the shoot. "It sometimes was a little difficult. But Toronto is relatively repressed, i.e civilized."

Cosmopolis' Teaser Trailer Reactions

It looks, to be frank, absolutely brilliant, and it's certainly dampened any doubts we might have had for the time being. And R-Patz? Damned if he doesn't look, in the very brief glimpses, right at home. Is it possible that all the doubters are about to be proved wrong with a terrific performance?

Daniel Radcliffe mentions Rob in a new interview with Premiere.fr

I have a weird relationship with fame. It's hard to live sometimes but I don't want to complain. People are nice with me and I think it comes with the way you handle things.

For example, I think it's totally different from what Rob (Pattinson) lives. He's a guy I like a lot - and no I do not have his cell phone number, I say this because it's always the first thing people ask me. He's a sex symbol. He's sexy and just need to do his brooding look for girls to fall. He has the perfect height to seduce girls, I'm the total opposite (laughs). He might be charming and cute, wild and sexy .. I do not have this kind of status, just look at pictures in the press. When we're put side by side, I look a little silly or I make faces whereas Rob always looks like a ladies' man. Therefore it doesn't help me when it comes to the ladies.
Maybe because now that they grew up with me they consider me more like a big brother than a potential boyfriend.

New/Old Fan Pictures of Rob at the Cosmopolis set

Philip Glenister talks 'Bel Ami' and Rob's fans

Philip Glenister is not given to musing about his work. He’s a jobbing actor – or at least that’s what he’d have you believe. When asked what made him commit to playing Charles Forestier, a journalist in 19th-century Paris in new film Bel Ami he quips, ‘I was free on a Tuesday.’

But much about Philip is a front. Behind the gruff exterior – which he used to great effect as the brash DCI Gene Hunt in Life On Mars and its sequel Ashes To Ashes – is not quite a softie, but certainly someone who cares about his craft and works hard. He just likes to joke about it.

I ask him whether he had any journalists in mind when playing Forestier, the man who gives Robert Pattinson’s caddish character Georges Duroy his big break. ‘I based it on Piers Morgan,’ he says with a cackle.

Forestier and his wife, Madeleine, played by Uma Thurman, take Duroy under their wing, and she advises him the best way to get on in Paris is via the city’s most influential wives. Duroy embarks on some torrid affairs and steamy bedroom scenes as he scales the social ladder.

So how was it working with such impressive actors on the risqué period drama? Word is, Uma can be temperamental. ‘She’s bonkers,’ he jokes. And then there was Robert, one of the hottest actors in the world thanks to his role in the Twilight films. ‘We were filming at a house in Hertfordshire adjoining a school. The pupils got wind of it and started chanting, “Robert, Robert”. We had to threaten them with cattle prods!’

David Cronenberg talked about Rob & Cosmopolis at Queen's University Film and Media Courses (March 13th)

His film Cosmopolis, based on the novel by Don Delillo, is in post-production. It stars Robert Pattinson as a Manhattan millionaire.

The film was shot in Toronto, a favourite shooting location of Cronenberg’s.

“I’ve never shot a foot of film in the U.S., even though a lot of my movies are set there,” he said.

Toronto also provided a refuge for Pattinson’s international celebrity, he said.

“When we were shooting on the streets, [Pattinson] had a lot of fans crowding around, but he could go to bars and clubs in his street clothes and people didn’t recognize him,” he said.

Cronenberg said Pattinson has a deep knowledge of cinema with a talent that stretches beyond what is shown in the Twilight Saga franchise.

“He’s a very serious actor. He wants to be great and takes the trouble to try and be great,” he said. “What he does in [Cosmopolis] will lay that question to rest, which a lot of people who are skeptical of Twilight are asking.”

Pattinson wouldn’t be the first actor to be recognized for his talent in a Cronenberg film.

William Hurt and Viggo Mortensen were nominated for Academy Awards for their respective roles in 2005’s A History of Violence and 2007’s Eastern Promises.

But winning an Oscar isn’t one of Cronenberg’s personal goals, he said.

“You’ll kill yourself if you do that. In Hollywood, the Oscar is like a religious icon — it’s like the Holy Grail,” he said. “The Weinstein’s are famous for spending millions of dollars to get that Oscar … but that isn’t the game I’m playing.”

The Weinstein Company is a U.S. film studio founded by Bob and Harvey Weinstein, who previously founded Miramax studios.

In Hollywood, a movie’s budget often determines its content, Cronenberg said.

“It would be naive to do a $200-million film and expect to be an extreme, radical filmmaker,” he said. “You just know you’re going to have to be much more conservative because you need that huge audience … which is why I continue to make indie films.”

Many filmmakers are swayed to make their art appeal to the masses, at the expense of its quality, he said.

“As an artist you have to try and ignore the outside pressures, not just in terms of violence, but with sex or anything that’s taboo,” he said. “If you’re distributing your movie all over the world … the fears of one country aren’t at all the fears of another country.”

Violence and sexually-explicit content are prevalent throughout Cronenberg’s films, but he insists all his movies feature deliberate comedic moments.

“I don’t think I need to do something that’s classified as a comedy, but I wouldn’t do anything that didn’t have some humour.”
